Women's Month, Black Women Honey, Hustle and Flow
Name: Name: Angela Hollowell
Bio: Angela Hollowell, is a full-time creative entrepreneur living in the Bull City, otherwise known as Durham, North Carolina. She picked up a camera in 2015 and hasn't looked back since. From photography to filmmaking, creating visual stories has been a passion that turned into a career. She’s currently focused on creating documentary film and photography projects, running YouTube channels featuring my video podcasts, and talking about how visual storytellers and creative entrepreneurs can build their audience and impact.
Name of your company and it’s mission/goal?
Rootful Media. Our independent media production company focuses on documentary filmmaking centered on the outdoors, the environment, human rights, and social justice issues centering Southern voices. Our video interviews and community newsletter feature themes about creative entrepreneurship in North Carolina and beyond. We help creative entrepreneurs and organizations grow their audience and impact.
What made you want to work in the podcast industry? I started my podcast to be a conduit for stories in my community. I'm a firm believer that where you live shouldn't dictate your access to resources and mentorship, two things that were vital to my success as a creator and truly allowed me to go full-time into creative entrepreneurship.
What is your occupation outside of podcasting (if any)? I'm a filmmaker.
What podcasts does your business produce or create? Honey & Hustle is my independent podcast, and it promotes the Please Hustle Responsibly community (honeyandhustle.co /community) as well our digital and physical products.
Creative Architects by Castos is a branded show I hosted and produced for Castos, a podcast hosting company. (castos.com)
Do you have an original series? Yes
What's it about? Honey & Hustle celebrates the North Carolina entrepreneurial ecosystem featuring storytelling interviews from founders, small business owners, and creators.
Why is there a need for an organization like yours? In an age where video is king, impactful visual storytelling reigns supreme. Flashy videos grab attention, meaningful videos spark action. Whether its a documentary film, a commercial, a video podcast, or an original series, we make things that engage and inspire our audiences to be a part of the change they hope to see and amplify the people, organizations, and communities that are integral to that change.
How'd You get into podcasting? By accident. I just started recording interviews with my cameras and then people started asking if I had a podcast.
How long have you been in the podcasting space? Almost 4 years.
What's one thing you wished you'd known about podcasting when you started? How time-intensive it can be to not just create a show, but to create a great show.
In a few sentences tell me briefly, about one of your favorite episodes or interviews from your podcast. One of my favorite episodes was our highlights episode where we were able to grab snippets across multiple interviews from season 3. We cut and edited highlights from over 40 episodes, which was a huge team effort and our most rewarding. Our guests and our audience appreciated the curation and attention to detail. It's the first episode of its kind on Honey & Hustle.
What are some resources or tips you've learned in your podcast journey? Tips… Continue to reiterate on your format, software systems help you produce a show more efficiently and consistently, choose guests based on their potential to add to the show premise not because of their perceived audience size.
What are your hopes for the future of podcasting? That video podcasting is more widely embraced. That video podcasters continue to push for creating the highest quality shows possible. That video podcasters make shows that people will also want to listen to on a streaming app.
